Inspirational Lecture – An Everest Journey
Spanning 25 years of adventures across 4 continents and 20 expeditions, An Everest Journey is Barry Roberts' story of achieving a dream of climbing Mount Everest. Barry's perspective on his travels is coloured by the many roles he's undertaken on diverse expedition projects as a leader, geographer, builder, climber, diver, management consultant and medic. His expedition career culminated recently when he summited Everest up the North Ridge from Tibet on May 24th 2004, despite having broken his back in a skiing accident in March, 3 weeks before departing the UK for the expedition. During summit week, 6 climbers from other teams perished in the death zone above 8000m whilst Barry's team put 33 climbers and Sherpas on the top. He talks candidly about life and death in the mountains, successes, failures and near misses. Emotive, informative and honest, Barry's lecture is illustrated by stunning images and video clips.

First and foremost, Barry is an entrepreneur and businessman and Barry effectively relates his adventures to the world of work, teams and leadership. He is the Commercial Director of Wilderness Medical Training and Managing Director of Corporate Interventions. Inspirational speaking engagements with teams, business leaders and for conferences or special corporate events can be coupled with:

  • Team development consultancy
  • Leadership development consultancy
  • Executive 1:1 coaching

Biographical Summary

Barry "Baz" Roberts, 42, climbed Mount Everest via the North Ridge, reaching the summit in an impressive 6hrs 10mins from Camp 4 on May 24th2004, having climbed directly from Camp 1 to Camp 3 (900m) two days before. This was his 11th expedition to the Greater Ranges of the Himalaya, Karakoram and Hindu Kush in Nepal, Pakistan and Tibet.

In September 2003 he reached 7800m on Shishapangma 8012m before turning back in chest deep snow (without supplementary oxygen). He has made first ascents of 6000+m peaks in the Karakoram and Hindu Kush and in 1986 was the first to forge a route over the Khurdopin Pass from Snow Lake (at the head of the Biafo Glacier in the Karakoram) to Shimshal village (and back again a week later!). In his professional expedition career spanning 21 years and 20 expeditions, Barry has ski toured, climbed, conducted snow chemistry research and led school groups, British Army Cadets and corporate management trainees and executives on a great variety of expeditions. These have also included a diving research project in Belize and an orphanage building project in Kenya with the Olympic hero Kip Keino.

He is formerly the Wilderness Director of the prestigious Rocky Mountain YMCA in Alberta, a ski patroller and a mountain instructor (in Kenya) and Director of the British charity Raleigh International in London.

Professionally, he is an expert in wilderness medicine and is the Commercial Director of Wilderness Medical Training (www.wildernessmedicaltraining.co.uk) and a Leadership and Team Development Consultant and Executive Coach running a private company, Corporate Interventions Ltd.

He is co-author of a ski touring book, soon to be available online atwww.staying alive offpiste.com. Barry is a passionate ski mountaineer and makes his winter home in Chamonix where he also indulges in climbing, paragliding and skydiving. He blends his careers in wilderness medicine and corporate leadership training with his love of the mountains and wild places and has introduced many corporate "desk jockeys" and doctors to the adrenaline fuelled mountain challenges of the French Alps.

One of his most memorable expedition moments was getting pinned down in the dark on the forest track up Mount Kenya by a grumpy elephant when guiding a group of young Welsh cancer victims! His first expedition at 15 was by open canoe to James Bay through northern Ontario, Canada. He has dreamed about climbing Everest since he was 19 and growing up in the mountainous suburbs of Toronto. Barry will incorporate his Everest story into his corporate inspirational speaking tour.
